J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery bids goodbye to the Ottawa community

Dear customers, staff, and suppliers,

It is with very heavy hearts that we are announcing the permanent closure of J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery. While this decision has not been an easy one, it is the right decision for us.

After being a part of Ottawa’s vibrant business community for six decades, we are hanging up our gardening gloves and retiring. We truly feel blessed to be part of such an incredible community, and honoured to have met so many wonderful people over the years.

To our loyal customers, we want to express our heartfelt thanks. We’ve been lucky to have generations of families shop at J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery. Our customers are the reason we’ve stayed in business so long; it has been wonderful to assist them with all of their gardening needs. For customer questions regarding gift card redemptions, credit notes and warranties for items strictly purchased in 2019, please send an email to: sales@jalaporte.com by July 1, 2021

We also want to thank our incredible staff — including many family members — who have worked with us. Many of our staff members have been with us for over 20 years, and have become an extension of our family. We will forever be grateful for their hard work and devotion.

To our suppliers, who have worked so closely with us, we thank you for providing us with incredible products. We wish you continued success on the road ahead.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for sharing this journey with us!

Jean & Estelle Laporte

Enjoy your retirement stay safe, healthy and happy you will be greatly missed. I will think of you both when my beloved golden chain tree flowers every yr.

You were always our best choice. Thank you for the many years that I spent referring you my new out of town transferrees, that purchased a residence here and there in Orleans and Ottawa. It was always my pleasure to send them your way and also meet them to introduce to your gardens. Always enjoyed the stories. Thank you. Suzanne Robinson century 21 action power team🙏🌈

So sorry to see you go, but all good things come to an end.My wife always made Laporte Gardens her 1st choice for your variety of flowers. Shopped there for 40 years and won many prizes at theNavan Fair for her arrangements. Happy retirement.

Ever since we moved to Ottawa over 30 years ago, never did we buy a plant/tree/shrub that wasn’t from Laporte Nurseries. Every spring had a ritual for us: walking through your beautiful greenhouses, planning for the season ahead. It always felt like going to a friend’s house. We were always greeted with warm friendly smiles and the service we received always had a personal touch. We met and cherished 3 generations of Laporte family members and truly valued all the expert advice given over the years. We learned so much! Thank you also for being such an important part of the community and for providing countless summer jobs for local students, including our daughter. Jean and Estelle, we wish you both a glorious retirement. You both worked so hard over the years, time for you to slow down and smell the roses ;) Thank you very much for all your help over the years and we will always cherish our memories of time spent together at your nursery. Merci beaucoup et bonne retraite, vous le méritez bien!

Great memories of going there as a kid in the 1970’s with my family to buy plants. Enjoy your retirement!

I am very sorry to hear you are closing. I will never forget the wonderful help I received from Estelle and Jean while I worked in the gardens at Camelot Golf Course and for my private clients. You will be truly missed. I love the big head j my hubby purchased last summer at your place. Happy retirement

So sad to see this announcement! Where will I go to get the best quality plants and supplies in Ottawa? I have my red maple tree and rose hedge left to enjoy from you. You will be missed! I want to wish you a well deserved happy retirement! Merçi! 👏🥂👏

From my first house to the “last”. Laporte’s was the place to go for anything outdoors. As a former Vancouver area resident, I would often go just to be around the vegetation as well as chat with the people that appreciate what plants and flowers do for our lives. You had a very well run business with staff that not only knew what they were talking about but had personalities that suited the business – they loved their jobs and the people that shopped there. Happy retirement – certainly justified.

Nelson McClinton January 15, 2021

We will miss our annual visits to your wonderful garden centre but wish you a long and healthy retirement.

Susan Andrews January 15, 2021

I’m so sad to hear this, decades of shopping at your nursery, like 4 decades to be honest. I will surely miss you. Blessings to all your family and thank you for the great service you always provided.

Nicole Lalonde January 15, 2021

Visiting the Papeete Nursery was one of my favourite outings in spring and summer. Always helpful, the service was excellent and the products excellent. Sorry to see you close! Happy retirement

Désolée de vous voir partir mais heureuse retraite!

Huguette Young January 15, 2021

I moved to Orleans in 1971, pregnant for my first child and the following summer we were told there was a great place to get all we needed to bring beauty to our new home. I’ve shopped at Laporte’s for years and recommended your company to many, many people. Congratulations on your retirement. You’ve been a treasure to this community and there will always be those of us who drive by your location and say, “Remember when we used to go to Laporte’s every spring & fall?” Thank you and good luck.

Sue Moerman January 15, 2021

Sad to read the news and also wondering where I will go from now on that will provide quality, variety and solid advice. Also happy for Estelle & Jean to begin this new journey of retirement. I was confidant that Nicholas would take over seamlessly the family business. All the best to your family!

On a personal level, I am so sorry to hear this news. You have been such a large part of the gardening community for so long and we have all benefited from your knowledge and expert advice. Spring just won’t be the same without the annual trek to your garden centre. Thank you for all you have done to help us beautify our surroundings and best wishes for a long and happy retirement as you set out on this new phase of your lives.

David Moloney January 15, 2021

I’m so sad to see this news. I love the garden centre and the expertise of the staff. I spent many a Saturday mornings with my mom at your location on Montreal Rd. I wish you a very happy and healthy retirement. All good things must end, sigh.

Robyn Rivard January 15, 2021

This is terrible news. I’m at a loss as to where I can look after my gardening needs. The other nurseries in the area don’t seem to have the variety, quality or knowledge that Laporte’s has. We’ve enjoyed shopping there over the years, and you will be missed. This is a real blow to my landscaping requirements.

Enjoy your retirement.

John Curran January 15, 2021

Enjoy your well deserved retirement!
