J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery bids goodbye to the Ottawa community

WeDear customers, staff, and suppliers,

It is with very heavy hearts that we are announcing the permanent closure of J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery. While this decision has not been an easy one, it is the right decision for us.

After being a part of Ottawa’s vibrant business community for six decades, we are hanging up our gardening gloves and retiring. We truly feel blessed to be part of such an incredible community, and honoured to have met so many wonderful people over the years.

To our loyal customers, we want to express our heartfelt thanks. We’ve been lucky to have generations of families shop at J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery. Our customers are the reason we’ve stayed in business so long; it has been wonderful to assist them with all of their gardening needs. For customer questions regarding gift card redemptions, credit notes and warranties for items strictly purchased in 2019, please send an email to: sales@jalaporte.com by July 1, 2021

We also want to thank our incredible staff — including many family members — who have worked with us. Many of our staff members have been with us for over 20 years, and have become an extension of our family. We will forever be grateful for their hard work and devotion.

To our suppliers, who have worked so closely with us, we thank you for providing us with incredible products. We wish you continued success on the road ahead.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for sharing this journey with us!

Jean & Estelle Laporte

Surtout, merci.

THANK YOU for your 6 decades of service to our community!
Closing a business is never easy. Such a successful business, where customers are treated like family, is even more difficult.
Happy retirement!

So sad to to hear this news, however, we do want to wish you a Happy Retirement.
We will miss our trips to the nursery to get our flowers, shrubs etc that we have done for 30 plus years. Thank you for always giving us knowledgeable, courteous and friendly service.
Your closure leaves a huge void in our community.
We wish we could have said farewell in person.

I am so happy that you have made the decision to retire. You have worked so hard to help the members of our community have beautiful flowers, trees and gardens. I always purchased my flowers from you and loved to see the elaborate choice you had, always so well organized so it was easy to choose from. For selfish reasons, I’m very sad that I won’t be able to come to Laporte anymore but I think you deserve a fun filled retirement now that you are still young. I wish you a lot of joy, fun adventures and most importantly health. Thank you for everything. ❣️

Congratulations on your retirement! Laporte Gardens was the place to work in the 80s! My friends and I went to Gloucester HS and would head to Laporte Gardens after school for our shifts. Lots of fun memories working there! Any time I say something at all knowledgeable about fruits or vegetables now, my husband says, “Oh, I know….you worked at Laporte Gardens…” 😊

I’m sadden to hear this news but I’m delighted to hear you are starting this new chapter in your lives! You offered so many your professional advice and more! You bought me a coffee last year in the drive- thru at Tim’s … the employee said you recognized me 🥰 I was shocked since so many people visited your store!
You will be missed dearly but I sincerely wish you the happiest retirement and hope you both have many years to enjoy it. Congratulations!!as 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

A real loss for the community.
Quality products, clear sound advice and the ever patient and friendly attitude, even in the busiest of times. You were a big help to me. You were a contributor to school and camp programs. You contributed in so many other ways. Also sad to see the end of a large employer in the east end.

Jean and Estelle — it has been a real pleasure. Thank-you.

Thank you for the wonderful years! When I look at my garden, memories of Laporte’s will always be with me. I wish you nothing but the very best in retirement to you and your family.

This is the saddest news of the pandemic. Jean and Estelle, you were always there to answer all my gardening questions when I first started a garden in 1995. Bought all my plants, which were always the best of quality, from you guys. All the suggestions and the remedies for all my plant problems that you gave helped me to take care of my garden. You will be sorely missed. I wish you all the best in all your future ventures. You have worked very hard and I guess deserve some time to relax! Good Luck and thank you!

I am saddened to hear that you are closing. Since moving to Ottawa in ’92, we were guided to see your beautiful green space. We started re-doing the landscaping and continue to have plants from your garden. You fill our lives with such beauty that it is a shame to see it go. I pray someone would step up and continue to fill the big boots left behind. We hope your retirement is blessed with fond memories of what you have provided to your community. God Bless

I am beyond saddened to hear the news. I have never gone anywhere else. Estelle gave my soon to be 10 year old daughter her very first flowering plant! She was delighted and so excited to get home and plant it and since then has helped me every year to plant my garden. I have great pictures! Thank you for all of your advice and expertise over the years. You have been an extraordinary and special part of our community. We wish you, your family and all of your wonderful employees all the best in the years to come.

Hi Jean and Estelle – so sorry to hear that the family business is closing. Most of us kids worked at Laporte’s when your dad ran the business and always admired the hard work and wonderful relationships your whole family had with neighbours and customers. You were one of the pillars of the community and will be sorely missed. Hope you fully enjoy a well-earned retirement!

You have been so helpful since we moved into our brand new home in 1987…. . You helped to develop my love for gardening….don’t know what I would have done without you. Thank you so much.

Genevieve Billingsley January 16, 2021

My Japanese lilac purchased from your gardens will continue to thrive on my front lawn in remembrance of all of you at Laporte Gardens. Happy retirement and thanks for the years you gave us all!

Very sad to read the news this morning that you are saying goodbye. But I’m being selfish. I wish you all the very best in your retirement. You will have time to do your own gardening :-) I’m sure our east-enders will see you in the community. Thank you for all the years of service, advice and gardening joy! The memories will be treasured. Stay healthy and have fun!

I’m at a loss for words… so sad to see your amazing nursery gone. You both were always willing to help and never seemed rushed. Your whole staff was amazing as well. Enjoy your retirement stay safe, healthy and happy you will be greatly missed. I will think of you both when my beloved golden chain tree flowers every yr.

You were always our best choice. Thank you for the many years that I spent referring you my new out of town transferrees, that purchased a residence here and there in Orleans and Ottawa. It was always my pleasure to send them your way and also meet them to introduce to your gardens. Always enjoyed the stories. Thank you. Suzanne Robinson century 21 action power team🙏🌈

So sorry to see you go, but all good things come to an end.My wife always made Laporte Gardens her 1st choice for your variety of flowers. Shopped there for 40 years and won many prizes at theNavan Fair for her arrangements. Happy retirement.

Ever since we moved to Ottawa over 30 years ago, never did we buy a plant/tree/shrub that wasn’t from Laporte Nurseries. Every spring had a ritual for us: walking through your beautiful greenhouses, planning for the season ahead. It always felt like going to a friend’s house. We were always greeted with warm friendly smiles and the service we received always had a personal touch. We met and cherished 3 generations of Laporte family members and truly valued all the expert advice given over the years. We learned so much! Thank you also for being such an important part of the community and for providing countless summer jobs for local students, including our daughter. Jean and Estelle, we wish you both a glorious retirement. You both worked so hard over the years, time for you to slow down and smell the roses ;) Thank you very much for all your help over the years and we will always cherish our memories of time spent together at your nursery. Merci beaucoup et bonne retraite, vous le méritez bien!
