WeDear customers, staff, and suppliers,
It is with very heavy hearts that we are announcing the permanent closure of J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery. While this decision has not been an easy one, it is the right decision for us.
After being a part of Ottawa’s vibrant business community for six decades, we are hanging up our gardening gloves and retiring. We truly feel blessed to be part of such an incredible community, and honoured to have met so many wonderful people over the years.
To our loyal customers, we want to express our heartfelt thanks. We’ve been lucky to have generations of families shop at J.A. Laporte Flowers & Nursery. Our customers are the reason we’ve stayed in business so long; it has been wonderful to assist them with all of their gardening needs. For customer questions regarding gift card redemptions, credit notes and warranties for items strictly purchased in 2019, please send an email to: email@example.com by July 1, 2021.
We also want to thank our incredible staff — including many family members — who have worked with us. Many of our staff members have been with us for over 20 years, and have become an extension of our family. We will forever be grateful for their hard work and devotion.
To our suppliers, who have worked so closely with us, we thank you for providing us with incredible products. We wish you continued success on the road ahead.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for sharing this journey with us!
Jean & Estelle Laporte
You will be missed! I spent lots of happy hours looking all through your selection, and always came home with many more plants than what I had been originally looking for. This summer, and my garden, won’t be the same without a trip to Laporte’s. Happy retirement!
Thank you for your passion, commitment and the wonderful years. You offered such a great variety of plants that could not be found anywhere else. You will be missed!
Wishing you the best of what life has to offer! Happy Retirement!
I will miss my annual trips from Kanata to your location. Your products were always of top quality. Happy retirement!
I was walking at work and overheard someone mention that Laportes is permanently closing. I stopped dead in my tracks and backed up towards them. WHAT?! Are you serious? I couldn’t believe it.
So many positive memories stemming from this place over my entire life. Going there as a child with my 2 other siblings in the 90s was always a magical mini-adventure. Pulling eachother around on the wagons. Playing on the jungle gym. Experiencing the seemingly endless rows of vibrant colors and aromas. We planted an oak tree out front which we got to watch it slowly grow into a huge, magnificent tree (which surely feeds all the squirrels in Orleans with its downpour of acorns lol!).
Going to Laportes always felt like a retreat to heaven. Even in my adult years I still felt the magic of Laportes. Everyone there was always so positive and helpful.
You guys truly built something special. On the extremely rare occasion I had to go somewhere else for gardening material, it just felt like an empty business transaction. Laportes was an experience. Laportes felt like family.
The world needs gardening now more than ever! I was looking forward to getting back into gardening this coming season. Big plans with my Mom… This is devastating news and I really hope someone as passionate as you guys can step up to carry on the legacy in some way or another.
Thanks for all the memories over the decades. You will forever be positively intertwined in the countless lives around Orleans.
Thanks for your help over the years, my backyard garden is what it is today thanks to your service and selection. I have fond memories of taking a vacation day every May specifically to browse through your store and start my season with seedlings I was looking for, and as always a few seedlings that I just have to try!
A truly sad day. I got to know Jean and Estelle through Roch Laporte as a 1980’s business associate and very much empathize with the hardships of running a business. While trying to support them through COVID, I sensed the frustrations of attempting to digitize a very touch, smell-and-feel front end of the business with the equally challenging supply chain limiting back end of the business. Pre-pandemic, this was “the” place to go in Ottawa to be embraced by the beauty of flowers and the aromas that make life so special.
I wish Jean and Estelle all the best and perhaps in a selfish way hope their legacy can somehow continue either thru the family or by someone who can continue to offer the special gifts they gave the community.
Thank you so much for your great plants and even more wonderful advice. Every time we look at our wonderful Vanilla Strawberry, Quick Fire and Bobo hydrangeas, DeGroot cedars, and our Amur maple tree we will thank you for the beauty in our gardens and the pleasure in our life. Estelle, thank you for advice and suggestions about the right plants for our annual and perennial gardens in challenging environments. Congratulations on your very successful careers and business and now all the best in the next chapter. You will be missed.
Very sad to hear that you are closing your door. You have been wonderful . the staff was so helpful . and 1 learn so much through the years.
Hello Estelle and Jean, your nursery was my happy place for 30 years. I looked forward to going every year , bought shrubs, trees and flowers for our house, still doing well. (I’m the lady, Estelle, who told you how well diagnosing beyond did at our cottage). While I am sad not to be able to go anymore, I know last year must have been very difficult for your family, and am happy you will be safe. You certainly earned your retirement! Sincerely, Linda
My first visit to see you was in the late 80’s. There was one green building and I purchased a Boston fern. You helped me design my garden at the entrance to my new home in Fallingbrook. In 2008 I moved to Sandpiper Cove where once again I sought out your friendly advice. Subsequent to that your design, plants and blue spruce grace the entrance to Sandpiper Cove.
I will miss strolling through your gardens and your friendly smile and helping me select the ‘best’ of the best. Jean you saved my red maple, you are my hero.
Enjoy your retirement, enjoy life! See you at Farmboy!
Congratulations on your retirement! My husband and I retired in Orleans a couple of years ago. It’s been great. As an avid but not necessarily good gardener I was so happy to find your amazing business (we’re from Oakville). We were hoping to use you to design our garden this year. We are so sad to see you go but wish you health and happiness. You deserve it.
I’m extremely saddened to hear of the closure of my favourite nursery in Ottawa. For nearly my entire gardening career, Laporte’s has always been my reliable, go-to spot for perennials, annuals, hanging baskets, tropicals, you name it! I’ll never forget one of the owners, Estelle, who would always greet me every Spring with a huge smile and even help me fill my seemingly never-ending list of orders for my clients. I always felt like a kid in a candy store, checking out all the new arrivals and coming up with outstanding arrangements due to their inspiring, top quality selections — easily the best in the Ottawa region! Her and her husband defined what passion, dedication, hard work, and customer service was all about. Listening to their interview on CBC today made me tear up as they will be truly missed. All I can say is, “Grazie Mille Jean & Estelle, and all the best to you and your family for a Happy Retirement! You Deserve it!”

Jean and Estelle: I am happy that you will now be enjoying a more relaxed pace of life with family and friends, but am so very sad that I will not be able to go to ’Laporte’s’ for my gardening supplies! You are to thank for getting me started on Black Chokeberry shrubs (Aronia melanocarpa) from which I harvested over 30 lbs of fruit last year. Un très gros merci pour tout!
We will miss you. Over the past 25+ years, we could always count on Laporte’s for excellent products, superb service, and friendly advice. You should feel very proud of the business you operated these many years. You have earned the respect of your community and the affection of your customers – a rare achievement. Thank you. We wish you the very best in your well deserved retirement. Maybe you could take up gardening as a hobby.
Jean, Estelle, Nic & Veronique
Thank you for all you have done over the years for the ottawa community. I will certainly miss coming to pick up my boston ferns and being greeted with cheerful uplifting smiles from start to finish.
All the very best,
The Saadi Family
Hi Estelle and Jean,
Hoping that this reaches you;
I am one of Wendy Morgan’s sisters and would like to take this opportunity to say
THANK YOU…for all the beautiful and wonderful flowers we’ve purchased every year. My gardens will have lots of memories as well. Mama is going to miss you both, but wishes you both a HAPPY RETIREMENT! We all do!
I’m hoping you know who we are:
Mama – Dora. The one you would always have a special plant or flower for and simply adored.
To the Laporte family and all of their wonderful staff,
Words can’t express how incredibly sad we, my mum and I, are to hear that you’re closing your doors forever.
I am being honest when I say that I’ve done quite a bit of crying because your nursery was not just a place to purchase plants, it was a place my mum and my sisters thought of as a home away from home. A place we met often as we planned out our pots and gardens. A place filled with the beauty of flowers, birds, insects and friendship….a place filled with love.
It’s impossible to count the number of hours we’ve spent there and the incredibly warm welcome we received each and every time we visited. No other nursery will ever compare.
The most special times have been on Mother’s Day and June 1st…that’s my mum’s birthday, and every year this was her birthday wish…“We have to go to Laporte’s because I need my hug from Estelle.”
Estelle, I know how much her hugs meant to you but I’m not sure if you truly know what they meant to her? She commented to me the other day saying that she’s never going to get another hug and it really saddened her.
Mum’s going to be 90 this summer and will not get her hug. A hug given by you Estelle with tons of love for an incredible lady…..my mum. She loves you like you are one of her own children.
This Summer, my gardens will once again thrive with beautiful plants purchased at your nursery and it gives me great joy seeing things come to life. Thank you for that.
Jean & Estelle, although COVID will most likely rob us of our hugs, my garden and my sisters’ gardens welcome a visit from you any time you wish. You can stop by and smell the flowers you so lovingly helped us grow. Our garden gates are always open to you.
All the best in your retirement…..you are beginning a new journey and I’m happy for you.
You will be, and already are, missed dearly my friends.
Love to you both and please tell Nicky she’ll be missed as well.
Jo-Anne & Dora “mama” Fish
When I heard the news this evening that you have closed, I cried. I can’t begin to tell you how much we have appreciated your beautiful nursery since we started gardening in 1993 – total novices! You and your staff these many years helped us make great decisions to the point folks stop in front of our home to say say how much they like what “we’ve done”. Thank you so much for everything. We will miss you greatly but wish you much happiness and success for the future – you deserve it! Jayne & Reg
Surely among the saddest news coming out of an already difficult year… To say that I am heartbroken is an understatement. NO OTHER NURSERY can hold a candle to J.A. Laporte Flowers and Nursery. It was more than a visit to the garden center… It was an EXPERIENCE like no other.
Dearest Estelle, my Mum will always cherish your Mother’s Day hugs. ❤️
Thank you ALL for giving Orleans such a beautiful place to find the most beautiful examples of Mother Nature’s glory…You will be sorely missed by thousands of customers, me among them. xo
I am in tears at this news although happy for you both in your retirement. Called a fellow gardener to commiserate and we agreed there is no place like yours.
You helped with garden plans year after year and assisted my siblings pick out special trees to plant in my year in memory of my husband. All of your staff were always friendly and helpful. It is such a loss!
All the best.
As someone who has retired from a passionate working life, I can relate. You and your staff were empathetic to everyone’s landscaping needs and gave quality service in an unselfish manner. You can be proud of the thousands of gardens and yards that are adorned with your plants, shrubs and trees. Wishing you many good years ahead in your retirement.
Jean and Estelle
So many memories over the past 30 years of your wonderful nursery (there is no other!) and your energy, knowledge and open-hearted appreciation of all your customers. The integrity and passion with which you ran the nursery was always evident and that passion was passed onto all of us.
I am very grateful for the years, and for you and all your stellar employees. All the best to you as you enter into a new phase of your life.

J. A. Laporte, the most magnificent garden centre. Residing in Aylmer it was well worth
the distance to acquire the high quality of products whether it be evergreens, perennials, annuals, etcetera. It was a delight to wander through the aisles with such an organized and well displayed layout.
And you were one of the few places that welcomed my doggy Tara, the brindle greyhound.
She is grateful for the care and water given to her during those hot summer days.
My garden will never look the same now. Nevertheless, I am happy to know that you shall enjoy this new chapter of your life, well deserved.
Wishing you the best, to you and your family.
François & Tara
You, Estelle and Jean, have earned your well deserved retirement. However Brent and I are so sad to see you close your wonderful garden centre. I have been a loyal customer since 1992 when I moved to Ottawa. Last year Estelle you came after my car just to say hello when you recognized me in the pick up area due to COVID-19. Little did I know it would be our last chat. Thank you for your excellent suggestions and guidance over the years. We looked forward each spring to our visit at your garden centre and to see what your suggestions would be. We will truly miss you. Enjoy your health and many wonderful retirement years. Diane
