Application Tips: 4-Step Fertilizer Program

At J.A. Laporte’s Flowers & Nursery, our experts only recommend one lawn fertilizer, the 4-Step Fertilizer Program by Botanix. This top selling product has converted many gardeners. Once you try this, you will never look back!

This selection of nutrients has a proven track record. These synthetic fertilizers are created by specialists to meet lawn grass needs specific to our region. They're mostly mineral elements that are quickly assimilated by the plant. Most of the nitrogen, though, is released gradually so it's available between applications. It's very important to respect the prescribed doses on packaging. Too much could burn roots and low er the percentage of organic material in the soil. The mineral salts that are not absorbed by the grass can be picked up by rain or watering and carried into water courses and the water table.

Each fertilizer program includes 4 bags (Step 1 through 4). These synthetic fertilizers are created by specialists to meet lawn grass needs in our area. They're mostly mineral elements that are quickly assimilated by the plant. Most of the nitrogen, though, is released gradually so it's available between applications. Unlike many popular fertilizers sold in big box-stores, this fertilizer program is designed and formulated specifically for the climate in our area, including our severe winters.

1st Step: Apply anytime after spring cleaning & raking of lawn
  • Nitrogen rich, it’s perfect for rapid grass growth in early spring. 40% of the nitrogen is slow-release, so it's available to the grass for about six weeks.
  • NPK: 21-2-4
2nd Step: Apply mid-May to mid-June
  • Constant fertilizing ensures stability of growth and greening. Iron and magnesium support dense grass and uniform colour.
  • NPK: 16-0-4
3rd Step: Apply in July
  • This balanced formula helps grass build a reserve and resist difficult midsummer conditions.
  • NPK: 10-0-4
4th Step: Apply in September or October
  • This is the most important step: preparing your lawn for winter. It promotes root development and reserves that will kick-start your grass the following spring.
  • NPK: 8-5-15
Apply granular dolomitic lime two weeks after any application. It is recommended that you apply in late fall after step 4 has been applied, in November because because it emits a smell that helps repel moles and voles.

For all of the above steps, be sure to water afterwards or wait to apply before a rain. Please note that fertilizers should be applied no earlier than 5-6 weeks after the previous step to allow the previous step to dissolve completely.

    LIME:

Lime helps sweeten the acidic soil, which in turn will allow fertilizers to work better and be absorbed more efficiently.  It can be applied any time of year, as long as it is put down two weeks or so after any application of fertilizer as this product can hinder the performance of the nitrogen content in your fertilizer.  Lime will also keep mice and voles away if applied just before the snow in mid to late November.

    OVER SEEDING:

Over seeding can be done with or without adding a new layer of soil.  If you are satisfied with your existing soil content, simply spread the new seed on a dry existing lawn. Raking lightly afterwards will assure the seed will find its way to the soil level. Water regularly. If applying soil on existing lawn, no more than one inch thick should go down as too thick of a layer could harm or kill the existing lawn. This process can be done in the spring or in September.

How do I go about ordering the 4 step fertilizers.

Do you sell Rye grass seed that has been recommended as we had a terrible experience with Chinch bugs last year. I have treated my lawn with Wilson Bug X and watered fo r 3 days since but would now like to add recommended fertilizers and grass seed and 4 bags of good top soil.

Do you have curb side pick up?
